Golden Triangle
|
|
The infamous Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos converge, is Chiang Rai province's most popular attraction, luring thousands of visitors annually. This notorious area, located approximately nine kilometres from the historic town of Chiang Saen, is bolstered by its history and the surrounding towns. It's riverfront position at the confluence of the Mekhong and Ruak rivers lends it a unique appeal.
Located near the Northern-most point of Thailand - The Golden Triangle was once the centre of all opium poppy growing in the country, and actually refers to a large area of the three bordering countries. However, the point of actual convergence of these borders is what most people now call the Golden Triangle. Here, the illicit crops have long since been replaced by the small tourist village of Sob Ruak, and today the roads are flanked by countless small restaurants and vendor's souvenir stalls along the banks of the Mekhong river.
Sob Ruak's most enjoyable tourist pastime is its boat tours. Longtail boats are available for hire here, and cruising up and down the Mekong River allows visitors a glimpse of village life in the many riverside settlements - particularly over in Laos. It's a good way to escape the many tour buses that roll into town daily. There is also a casino, popular with Thai folk, over on the Myanmar side and special arrangements have to be made to get there - though they are not difficult.
The area's legacy of opium production, usage and trading - which continued right up until the 1980's, is well documented in two museums. One is found right in Sop Ruak, while the newer and more extensive one is a little way out of town. The latter, the Hall of Opium, is a new 10 million dollar installation that is world class and highly recommended.

Doi Suthep
|
|
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, known more casually as ‘Doi Suthep’ is one of the most important temples in Chiang Mai, as well as one of the most revered among all Thais. It is about 15km from the centre of Chiang Mai.
Doi Suthep mountain itself reaches an altitude of 1,676 meters (5,498 feet) and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep stands on the flank of the mountain at an elevation of 1,056 meters (3464 feet). Because of this, it’s always pleasantly cool with some amazing views of Chiang Mai city.
According to legend, a Buddha relic magically replicated itself just before it was about to be enshrined in the big chedi at Wat Suan Dok. The “cloned” relic was placed on the back of a sacred white elephant, which was allowed to roam whereever it wanted.
The elephant eventually climbed to the top of Suthep Mountain, trumpeted three times, turned around three times, knelt down and died. This was taken as a sign that this was the spot where the relic wanted to be, so King Ku Na built the original chedi on Doi Suthep at the end of 14th century.

Koh Larn - Coral Island
|
|
Only two hours from Bangkok, the beautiful beaches of Koh Larn - an idyllic island located just west of Pattaya - make a perfect day-trip. Known as Coral Island and covering an area of about 4 square kilometres, you spend the day swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. Enjoy the abundant coral and underwater world, either from the glass-bottom boat or by diving in.

A day trip to the outlying island is an essential part of any trip to Pattaya. One of the most popular offshore isles is Koh Lan, which offers fine, white sand and beautiful coral reef. The island just some 7.5 kilometres away from Pattaya shore, or about 45 minutes by ferry.
Koh Lan is a stone's throw to two small islands, which are Koh Sak and Koh Khrok. Koh Lan, however, is the largest, and the most popular of the three. One of Koh Lan beautiful pristine beach is Hat Laem Thian located to the southwest. Nearby is Samae Beach. If you head to the west, you will find Hat Ta Phan facing coral ranges. While Ta Waen Beach in the north is a place that most of the tour boats lay anchor at side to buy foods and souvenirs at the foodshops and stalls along the coast. Several hotels are located on the south area of the isle, which is another site to view coral reefs as well. To see the beauty of the underwater world surrounding Koh Lan, visitors can choose glass-bottom boats and surface-diving.
Equipment for snorkeling, parasailing, water skiing and jet skiing are available for rent on the island. Deep sea fishing expeditions can also be arranged from several sources on the island.

The Park has breeding pens with more than 1000 crocodiles, a zoo and a bonsai garden. The Million Years Stone Park& pattaya crocodile farm located on an over-70-acre piece of land just 15 minutes' drive from pattaya, this Park & Farm are great for a day out with with kids, take a photograph with small tigers, visit the money show and Crocodile show. Shows are repeated several times a day. The park has also a small zoo attached with, Elephants, Tigers and other animals.

Elephant show
|
|
In many places in Thailand, you can go to watch elephant shows. You can even ride on one for ten minutes which will cost you only 50 baht (about $1.20). During the elephant show you will see elephants painting, walking the tightrope and dancing to disco music. There is also a section of the show where volunteers are invited to lie down and let an elephant walk over them! Would you do that?
I have seen this show in different places. It is always the same. It is perfectly safe to volunteer

Bangkok has always been a city of cultural diversity, and that has long been reflected through a wide range of performing arts and entertainment, from the traditional 'Khon' (classical masked dance) and 'Likay' (Thai folk dance), to the glitz and glam of world-famous ladyboy shows - and even international Broadway productions. Unquestionably Thailand's leading performing arts institution, the Patravadi Theatre is widely known as an important venue for staging a variety of productions, ranging from classical to innovative and contemporary shows. Above all, the name Patravadi connotes an enduring commitment to developing and promoting the performing arts and performing artists in Thailand.
If you're looking for the ultimate cultural fix, try Khon, one of the most revered forms of performing arts in Thailand. Khon is a masked-dance dramatisation of the classic epic Ramakien (based on India's Ramayana), performed by troupes of non-speaking dancers. The story is told by a chorus at the side of the stage, and the choreography follows traditional models rather than attempting to innovate. Costumes are dictated by tradition, with demons wearing ornately coloured masks. The lavish costumes and graceful gestures and movements are what give a Khon performance such a unique edge. You can catch a show at the Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre, which is until December 2007 hosting a production about Hanuman, the charismatic monkey god and faithful servant of Rama
